How Danone Nutricia came to be

Originally known as Nutricia, the company was founded in 1896 by two brothers, Jan and Martinus van der Hagen, in the Netherlands. The siblings were inspired by the work of Professor Backhaus, who had succeeded in developing an infant formula. As this groundbreaking development came in a period when infant mortality was high, the van der Hagen brothers then began working on infant formulas.

Fast forward to nearly three decades later in 1923, the first nutritional guidelines for infants were released, and in 1946, the first Research Centre for Baby and Medical Nutrition in Zoetermeer was established. Several company milestones followed, such as the first publication on preterm nutritional solutions in 1975 and more – allowing for parents, medical practitioners and nutritionists to understand child nutrition better.

However, the most important milestone yet, which has proven to play a big part in all Dumex products even until now, is when Nutricia filed a patent on their unique prebiotics mix of galacto-oligosaccharides and long chain fructo-oligosaccharides (GOS/IcFOS) 9:1. Finally, in 2007, Nutricia officially became part of Danone, joining in their global mission to bring health through food to as many people as possible.¹
